Here’s an important message from our Regional Executive Director…It may seem overwhelming or unimportant to get prepared, but we know from recent floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and local house fires that taking steps ahead of time can help each of us, our families and our communities respond better and stay safer in a disaster.

September is National Preparedness Month. The American Red Cross joins the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a coalition of more than 1,500 organizations in helping us get prepared. Learn the three recommended preparedness actions to Be Red Cross Ready for emergencies: get a kit; make a plan; be informed. Take the Pledge to Prepare, get involved, and help to prepare New Hampshire.     kickup

Seven disaster volunteers from the local Granite Chapter of the American Red Cross have been sent to the Gulf Coast states. They join 22 other disaster volunteers from NH Red Cross chapters who are participating in the nationwide Red Cross response to assist the thousands of people displaced by Tropical Depression Gustav Read more...

Volunteers, Dotti and David Penny (in Red Cross vests), go over supplies in comfort
kits with Maria White, the chapter’s Chief Operating Officer. The comfort kits will be
distributed to people in the Gulf Coast area who have been displaced by recent hurricanes.

  • When calls came in on Thursday, July 24, around noon that wind storms had damaged and destroyed homes in eastern NH, Red Cross disaster volunteers were called in immediately to respond.

  • Calls to local vendors brought in food for all involved. Food and water distribution started that afternoon with about 200 meals to emergency responders. For the next several days, over 10,000 meals, snacks and beverages were handed out free of charge to disaster victims and emergency responders by Red Cross workers.   Read more...

Dan Brennan, who had served as the chapter’s Emergency Services Director from 2005 to 2007, has returned to take the job after Dale St. Laurent resigned last month.

Dan came to the Red Cross after serving for years as a police office on the Manchester force. In that work he started their successful Domestic Abuse Program.

“I look forward to working with disaster services,” said Dan. “I am especially pleased to work again with the chapter’s outstanding group of disaster volunteers.”

Dan led the disaster program during the April 2007 floods and was on the scene for the devastating string of apartment building fires in Berlin in January and February, 2007. He was instrumental in setting up the seven Disaster Action Teams that serve the disaster needs of communities throughout the chapter’s large jurisdiction.

“We are delighted to have Dan leading our disaster services program,” said Maria White, Chief Operating Officer. Anyone interested in being trained as a disaster volunteer may call Dan at 603-224-6697. Welcome back, Dan!

New England Blood Services from the American Red Cross held a blood drive on Friday, September 5, at the chapter office in Concord. Eighteen pints of life-saving blood were collected. Blood supplies are especially low. The four major blood types are all at the “low” level, meaning that donations are critically needed to avoid a blood shortage emergency. For information on scheduled blood drives in New Hampshire, go to

Two friends from Concord, Robert Fleishman and Ari Pollack, came in together to give blood at the chapter office   Running a blood drive is a demanding job! Barbara Pouliot, nurse and team supervisor at the chapter’s blood drive, had to deal with two phone conversations at once.

Chapter gets new truck

The chapter’s new pickup truck is ready and capable of delivering Red Cross services.

The Granite Chapter has a new truck, thanks to a generous grant from the Samuel P. Hunt Foundation and matching donation from Concord Nissan, Inc.

The Nissan Frontier King Cab SE 4x4 will be especially helpful during disasters carrying supplies and getting to disaster sites on back roads. It is capable of towing the chapter’s box trailers, which are used to move emergency equipment to the site of a disaster or to get bulky supplies and materials to a community that is hosting a health and safety class. Before acquiring this vehicle, the chapter had to depend on personal or rental vehicles to tow the trailers.

“We are truly grateful to the Hunt Foundation and Concord Nissan for making it possible for the chapter to purchase this vehicle,” said Tim Murray, Regional Executive Director of the American Red Cross chapters in New Hampshire. “The Granite Chapter has been depending on an 11-year-old van with high mileage. This truck will greatly help the chapter with the delivery of Red Cross services.”

The Granite Chapter serves 52 percent of the State’s area, including the Concord area, Lakes Region and North Country. Reliable vehicles are essential for providing services over such a large jurisdiction.
